I cannot make out
your delicate meanings
and under my masked and muffled words
you cannot hear the subtleties
of mine
denied hugs handshakes or touch
we must make do
with hints of smile
covered warmth dimly felt
across the mandated distances
even as the fabric
of our social networks
frazzle and shred
as we shelter in place
in this world of fear
when we need each other
as never before
space and safety dictate
our forced and meager emotional diets
